Camera Strap, Guatemala

Guatemala, Central America suffered a brutal civil war between 1960 and 1996, and was struck several years later by Hurricane Stan, which killed more than 1,000 people. Josefa lost her home because of the hurricane, though the 58-year-old was still mourning the death of her husband, who was killed during the genocide years earlier. She took the initiative, along with other village women, to transform colourful strings on wooden machines into beautiful and vibrant textiles, creating jewellery and colourful camera straps. Through their artistry and talent, the Guatemalan women earned themselves a prestigious international reputation.
