Mr. Cai Mingzhao, president of Xinhua News Agency, was born in 1955 in Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province, China.
A journalist-turned-leader in China’s media sector, Mr. Cai Mingzhao entered Xinhua News Agency, a top press outlet, in 1978. Beginning his career as a beat reporter in East China, he later served as deputy director and director at two of Xinhua’s domestic bureaus. Establishing a name for himself through his coverage of science and technology, he played an influential role in the reform of state-owned enterprises. His career highlights include secretary-general, vice president and executive deputy editor-in-chief at Xinhua; editor-in-chief of the People’s Daily; director of the Information Office of the State Council; and deputy minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China's (CPC) Central Committee. He became president of Xinhua News Agency in December 2014.
Mr. Cai Mingzhao has played an active role in promoting China’s internet development and has made important contributions to building the internet governance system. He spearheaded China.com, China’s first NASDAQ-listed internet firm, and Xinhuanet.com, China’s most prestigious news portal. He also launched influential dialogues like the China-US Internet Industry Forum, the China-UK Internet Roundtable, the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, Sino-ROK High-Level Media Dialogue, and the China-India Media Forum.
Mr. Cai Mingzhao was the spokesperson for the 18th CPC National Congress and a member of the 10th and 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He is also a member of the 18th CPC Central Committee.
